Out West at the Double RL Ranch, there is a rhythm to life that is impossible to ignore. It’s early to rise to tend to the land and the animals, each step of the day attuned to the hours of sunlight and the whims of nature. Mealtimes anchor the daily duties, bringing everyone back together after long hours outdoors to savor simple ingredients—provisions grilled over an open flame, stews simmering through the afternoon—that carry the comfort and strength of the land itself. For Ricky Lauren, these meals embody both family and tradition, honoring the rugged beauty of the nearby San Juan Mountains and the pioneering history of the region in southwestern Colorado. Through her cookbook, Ricky Lauren: Cuisine, Lifestyle, and Legend of the Double RL Ranch, she looks back at how the Double RL Ranch came to be, when she and Ralph first found the property’s Vance barn on a sunny afternoon in the summer of 1982. Since then, Lauren and her family have made countless memories at the ranch, with hearty American fare, alfresco dining, and a respect for the land—all central to their mountain way of life.

CODE OF THE WEST

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz. Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye
  • ½ oz. Drambuie
  • ¼ oz. Cynar
  • ¼ oz. Alpe Genepy
  • Herbetet
  • 1 dash walnut bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • Garnish with burnt lemon peel

Directions

Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass, stir, and strain over ice. Torch the lemon peel to heat the oils, then express over the drink and through the flame.
